Richard Eckerd

Richard Eckerd is an accomplished glass artist whose work is characterized by bold, fluid color and geometric forms. A native of Florida, his interest in the ocean and underwater life are reflected in the designs of many of his pieces.

Eckerd received his art degree from Tulane University before beginning years of study at the Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. His best known pieces are colorful, complex, nonfunctional vessel-like objects in which he takes a painterly approach to color, form, and line quality.  “The long historic relationship of glass as a material with things like teapots, pitchers, glasses, etc, provides an endless resource for metaphor." His altered, brightly colored geometric forms become the building blocks with which to explore the larger subjects of rhythm and gesture as they relate to both figure and vessel.

He now lives and works in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
